Dental anxiety and phobias

Help and information if you or a family member feels worried about visiting the dentist

According to research, 44% of adults experience a fear of visiting the dentist, and an additional 76% admit to postponing dental appointments altogether. If you find yourself among this group, rest assured that you are not alone. Even if you personally do not mind dental visits, it is likely that a family member may struggle with dental anxiety.

Whether you seek guidance for yourself or wish to support a loved one, we are here to assist. Feeling anxious should not hinder your dental health, as our dentists are adept at managing nervous patients.

Moreover, if you communicate your anxiety to your dentist, they can take steps to ensure your visit is as stress-free as possible—from the moment you arrive until you leave.

It is worth noting that approximately 25% of the UK population has not returned to the dentist since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is never too late to enhance your oral health, even if you have been avoiding dental visits for an extended period.

We are dedicated to ensuring that everyone has access to compassionate and comfortable dental care. Our staff is committed to fostering a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, allowing you to feel at ease while discussing any concerns you may have.

Advice for nervous dental patients includes

  1. Find a dentist that specializes in nervous patients.
  2. Communicate openly with your dentist.
  3. Schedule a consultation in advance.
  4. Make your first treatment appointment a simple clean and polish.
  5. Book your first appointment in the early morning.
  6. Bring music or practice breathing techniques.
  7. Bring a friend or family member with you.

If you're fearful or anxious, try speaking to your dentist, using relaxation techniques, and discussing pain management options

Although we have created a practice environment that is welcoming and calming, some patients may still benefit from additional support in alleviating anxiety. In such cases, we can refer you for Intravenous Sedation (IV) if desired.

Sedation may be a suitable option for you if you have encountered any of the following circumstances:

  • Previous traumatic dental experience
  • Fear of receiving dental treatment
  • Difficulty getting numb before dental treatment
  • Hypersensitive teeth
  • Difficulty in keeping mouth open
  • Sensitive gag reflex
